Black families are five times less likely than white families to receive a sizable inheritance. When they do, the amount is still typically three times lower on average than what white families receive. This disparity has contributed to Black Americans falling behind in wealth accumulation while white generational peers are empowered to move towards further economic stability and advancement.

Generations of systemic inequality, combined with limited opportunities to pass down knowledge and wealth, have left Black families and women with fewer advantages and a wider gap in access to high-impact opportunities.

We’re striving to change these dismal statistics by passing down knowledge and assets that will elevate families for generations.

One potential source of the wealth gap is differences in the intergenerational transfer of wealth, either through bequests to heirs or through transfers among the living. Using a statistical decomposition, the 1997 paper "Black-White Wealth Inequality: Is Inheritance the Reason?" estimated that inheritances account for 10 percent to 20 percent of the wealth gap. More recently, simulation analyses in the 2020 paper "Can Income Differences Explain the Racial Wealth Gap? A Quantitative Analysis" indicated that intergenerational wealth transfers explain 26 percent of the gap.
